Maitland Rams brothers Peter and Ben Urquhart will play an integral part in Newcastle’s quest for a division one Open State Championship in Moorebank this weekend.

But Newcastle’s search for an elusive title was made all the more difficult after they were drawn in pool A with defending champions Grafton as well as Illawarra and Tamworth.

Ben, 20, will play in his second state championship while his brother Peter, 23, will suit up for his fourth.

Ben thought Newcastle had the personnel to end their run of semi-final exits.

“We’ve got the team to go close to winning it,” he said.

“Last year we were knocked-out in the semi-final so hopefully this year we can go one step further.”

The Urquharts were the only two Rams players who nominated for the team but according to Ben, Newcastle coach Simon Vimpani had expressed interest in striker Matt Brown.

“Simon asked Pete and me why Browny hadn’t nominated for the team,” he said.

“He (Brown) has been playing really well for us this year and has been scoring a heap of goals.”

Newcastle trained for the first time on Thursday night before heading to Liverpool City Hockey Complex at Moorebank on Friday.

Pool matches are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday with the finals set down for Monday.

Other division one teams in the three-day tournament include Sydney, Lithgow and the Southern Highlands.

Maitland will enter a team at the championships and are seeded in division three against teams from Tamworth, Bathurst, Grafton, Macarthur, Far South Coast, Manning Valley and New England.

Devils hit back after shock start to game

THE Entrance overcame a slow start to score a 3-2 win over Gosford in the men’s Premier Hockey League local derby.

The win moves the Devils into outright second on the table, two points behind Norths.

Gosford started Sunday’s match at Wyong with an intensity belying their last-place on the table, troubling their more fancied rivals from the outset.

Emotions also played a key role, particularly in the second half, when The Entrance fought back from a 2-1 deficit to take the game.

There was a scuffle shortly after the Devils’ levelling goal, with tempers flaring repeatedly in both sides.

Victorious coach Ray Winwood-Smith said there was no love lost between the two coast sides.

“But at the end of the day, that’s what local derbies are about,” Winwood-Smith said.

While he was happy with his side’s performance, he was concerned with the slow start.

Gosford scored the first goal in just the second minute from a short corner to continue its history of solid starts.

Some tight defence allowed the Magpies to hold onto their lead for most of the opening half, before The Entrance levelled the scores thanks to Sam Coonan.

“In the first 10 minutes we rested on our laurels a bit,” he conceded.

But he felt his side’s structure was “positive” with both Gosford goals coming from short corners rather than general play.

Gosford coach Gavin Drennan was pleased with the efforts of his players heading into this weekend’s general competition bye.

“I think our young kids are improving week by week and are starting to get the cohesion with the older players,” Drennan said.

He said that he believed his players weren’t far away from their first win of the season.

In Division 3 Pool A, Maitland and Newcastle 2 have been drawn together and will share the spotlight with Tamworth 2, Bathurst, Grafton 2 and Crookwell. A tough pool to be in.

Newcastle Womens Premier League Round 11 Review
Tuesday, 08 June 2010 21:28
Round 11 saw the new draw come out. Game one saw Central and Regals play for the second week in a row. Regals blow Central away last week in the last eight minutes and won 4 nil. This week Central and Regals come out with their guns blazing. Central took scored first from a penalty corner only to have Regals hit but shortly after and equalise it at one all. Both teams were playing exceptionally well and after last week’s performance Central really looked comfortable as they had players return from injury. Central took advantage of some slack marking and took the lead to two – one. Once again this did not sit well with the league leaders and replied and levelled the game at two all. Regals were missing Jamie from the centre with illness and Sarah from the backs with an injured shoulder. Mel Greer took the centre role and played a good passing game. Kiarni Lowe seems lost as she is moved back and forth filling the gaps, one week she is up front the next she is in the backs. At the break both teams seemed happy with their current form. However Centrals returning injured players Sophie Ray, Alex Wilson and Shelby Cocking seemed to be back on the bench once the second half commenced. This cost Central upfront as the younger less experienced players were left to fill big shoes. Regals defence was too good and lead to them taking a three – two lead. With the half counting down to the final ten Alex Wilson and Shelby Cocking made their returns to the field while one of the younger Central girls copped a elbow in the jaw and left the field to receive medical attention. As Central started to push hard to get a goal back the earned themselves many penalty corners but could not link their set plays to find the net. Regals finally scored a late goal and took the win Four – Two

Game two was Souths and Tigers. Souths came into the game of f a two game winning streak which is a first ever for the premier team and were looking to make it three in a row. Souths were fired up and hit Tigers hard and took a quick one nil lead. Souths had made some positional changes this week which looked to be the reason why they were play so well. This was short lived as Tigers hit back to level it at one all. The experience of the Tigers pride seemed to out class the inexperienced Souths younger players. Tigers took charge as they went up two – one. Casey Skliros (Tigers) stood out in the first half alongside her were Prue Garvin and Charmaine Piper (both Tigers) all worked well in the midfield. Prue Garvin hit some amazing cross field passes while Casey and Charmaine worked the ball well to the forward line. Souths lost their composure towards the end of the first half as their tight marking went from dominate at the start of the game to dismal come the half time siren. Souths Coach Scott New made it clear to his team that they could not afford to slack off on the marking. Souths started the second half better then the first ended with tighter marking; however their passing skills seemed to have been left on the bench as they continued to turn possession over. Souths Keeper Belinda Delves played a great game putting her body on the line to ensure the goal deficit did not blow out. Tigers took the lead to three – one and looked to have the game in the bag. Souths found some last minute determination and put pressure on the Tigers D, earning them some penalty corners. It’s unfortunate they were not able to capitalise on these corners till after the final siren and scored to make the final score three – two to Tigers

University had the bye.

Maitland blitz University

A double to man-of-the-match Matthew Brown helped the Maitland Rams to a 6-2 thrashing of University on Sunday.

The Rams’ attack clicked in the second half at Maitland Hockey Centre as they put four goals past the Students to move into third spot on the Hunter Coast Premier League.

As well as Brown’s brace, Peter Urquhart, Tobin Bush, Dylan Cox and Dillon Macintosh all found the back of the net as the Rams turned a 2-1 half-time lead into a 6-2 demolition.

But the Rams had to come from behind to grab full points and were on the back foot early when University nabbed the first goal.

Rams coach Nathan Baker said University pounced on a rare Maitland defensive error.

“There was a bit of a mishap in the circle, one of our guys deflected it up and it hit (goalkeeper) Hugh (Lightbody) in the chest and went up into the air,” he said.

“Hugh wasn’t sure where it went and when it came down it fell right into the path of a Uni player who knocked it in.

“It was a bit of a lucky one and they didn’t really deserve it.”

From there the crisp passing of the Rams took over and they created

several chances with the Urquhart brothers, Peter and Ben, causing havoc, while Brown was always dangerous while in possession.

“Everybody played well – there was no bad player out there,” Baker said.

“We showed great teamwork and really finished well, which is something we’ve lacked in recent weeks.”

The win was the second biggest of the Rams’ season after they put eight past The Students in round two.

“In both games it’s been tight until half-time and then we’ve come out and rolled them,” Baker said.

“Personally I thought they played great on Sunday, they were all over us in the first half and dominated possession.”

The Rams meet Souths after the long weekend break, with a win meaning they would move three points clear of the fourth-placed team.

AS Central Coast Junior Hockey Association’s season hits its halfway mark this weekend, just one side has a clean slate.

The Gosford under-13s have won all nine of their games, including an 8-0 victory over Wyong last weekend. In the process the team has scored 45 goals without conceding one.

Gosford coach Kent Carr was pleased with the efforts of his players, who he said trained hard.

“There are some new players in there but for most of them, it’s their second year together,” Carr said.

He also made particular mention of his side’s Wyong opponents from the weekend.

“They didn’t stop trying and were really hard working.”

The match was a milestone for Wyong youngster Harriet Fordyce, who scored her first goal after taking up hockey this season
