Newcastle Take U17 Boys Title
Tuesday, 05 May 2009 08:21
ImageNewcastle has clinched the 2009 U17 Boys Title with a 4-2 win over Sydney in the final, held at Orange. The 2 teams had met in the pool matches with Sydney coming out trumps in that match 3-2. However Newcastle put that loss behind them quickly, and responded with a 6-0 mauling of Lithgow and a 7-0 flogging of Bathurst. This meant the team finished second and thier pool and rewarded with a SF berth against arch rivals Illawarra. Illawarra led 2-0 but Newcastle finished the stronger and took the match 3-2 and earnt the Grand Final matchup against Sydney. Newcastle has dominated this age group for the past 5 or so years. Hunterhockey.info congratulates the team, especially those members of this website who participated in that team.

Manning Valley finished 6th in the Division 2 competition when they were beaten 4-3 by Penrith in the 5th/6th playoff. Central Coast finished 7th after a 2-0 win over Sydney3 in the relegation battle. Both teams will remain in Division 2 for 2010.

Newcastles no2 side finished 7th in Division 3 with a 2-0 win over Shoalhaven.

Win an authentic Hockeyroos Replica thanks to Kukri
Sunday, 03 May 2009 07:46
ImageThanks to Kukri, you have the chance to win a Hockeyroos replica shirt. This will be available in either a mens or womens 'cut'.

You have to be participating in the F-H-E.COM HCPHL Tipping competition, so if your not yet involved, sign up today and start tipping. You may not win the big prize, but you still a shot at the special prizes on offer throughout the season.

So hows it work? It will be a knockout style tippster v tippster type competition. All tippsters will be placed ina draw and they will be matched to play another tippster in the first round. If Tippster A gets 14 points for that round, and Tippster B gets 12, then Tippster A is declared the winner and will progress to round 2. Tippster B is eliminated and will just resume normal tipping duties.

Details will follow via an email and in the forums, so stay tuned!!!

EXAMPLE
@GT is paired with Scotty@Work. @GT scores 12 points for his tipping that weekend. Scotty@Work scores 18. Scotty@Work wins that "game" and progresses to the next round, still in the hunt for the prize. @GT just resumes normal weekly tipping and prays he gets a chance at some other prizes later in the season.
Simple as that!!!!

Busy time ahead for young hockey player

NELSON Bay hockey player Mitchell Allen-Waters has a busy couple of months ahead as he prepares for the under 18 national titles in Darwin. The Merewether High student has been selected in the NSW side to compete in the tournament at the end of May, which will pit him against some of Australia's top up-and-coming talent.
"I'm probably running between two to five kilometres, two or three times a week ," he said. "It's going to be about 32 degrees up there with about 80 per cent humidity so I need to be fit and ready to play in short, hard bursts."
The 17 year old will be one of the younger players in the side, making him eligible to vie for a more senior position next year. "There is a chance to be selected for the national team but I think being a bit younger, it's a bit of a long shot," he said.
Aside from preparing for nationals, Mitchell is balancing year 12 studies with a NSW Institute of Sport position and commitments to his Phoenix North club that sees him play in the under 17 A grade and second and first grade mens sides.

HCPHL Round 5 Preview
Friday, 01 May 2009 23:12
ImageRound 5 of the HCPHL hits off sunday, with matches at the NIHC and Wyong. With the NIHC hosting the Hunter Power Conference U15 championships, the games at the NIHC all start a bit later then normal.

Wyong hosts the first game of the round, from 2:30pm when Gosford host Maitland. This is probably the match of the round, and pits 2 very strong sides against each other with a lot at stake. Gavin Drennan believes Gosford have not been impressed with thier performances so far, and will be hungry for a ictory this weekend to maintain a top 4 position. Mitchell McGlashan is unavailable due to injury whilst Chris Cousins will also be absent. This will give a couple of fringe players an opportunity to show thier value to the club. In regards to the match, Gavin had this to say: "We have had very close games against Maitland last season and expect this to be no different. The boys are still mindful of our loss to them last season in the semi’s which hopefully may provide some additional inspiration and make the difference on the day."
Maitland welcome back Peter Urquart and Cameron Ling, which means the team will be at full strength. Coach Peter Lovell wasnt impressed with the Rams performance last week against Norths, saying "Maitland are back to full strength and hopefully to make amen's for last weeks poor effort." Peter Urquart and Cayde Tusker will be the main strike weapons for the Rams as they push to stay in touch with the top couple of clubs. Gosford needs to win to stay in the 4, whilst Maitland needs to win to get into the top 4 and not find themsleves 6 points behind the competition leaders.

The NIHC sees 2 PHL games on the same time from 3:30pm in a real bonus for spectators and club fans.
The East Field sees Wests hosting The Entrance. Both teams will be eager to get a victory. Wests have been outplayed by Norths and Souths this season with some very bad scorelines in those matches. They have however been invovled in good close games against Gosford and Tigers and will be thinking The Entrance might be beatable this weekend. Wests are likely to be without a couple of regulars who would be involved with the U17 State Championships in Orange but have at the time of writing this review been unable to submit any team details. The Entrance will be itching to secure a victory against the cellar dwellars, and get thier season back on track. The team hasnt been playing too badly and would feel thier results to date have not reflected their performances at all. A lot depends on the performances of Brad Smith who has scored the majority of the teams goals. The Entrance need to find some support for him if they are to challenge for the title in 09. No team news submitted this week.
On the West Field Norths will tackle long time rivals Tigers. In terms of energy, this game should not be missed both clubs have 4 games back to back from PHL to 4th Grade and will have excelelnt crowds on hand, giving the match that extra bit of energy and excitement. On the field, Norths will be short a handful of players with U17 Commitments, including team leader Dave Willott who is coaching the Newcastle U17 1's. David Broughton however returns to the squad, and many of the players who have stepped up from 2nd's the past few weeks will need to do it one more time. Club legend Roland Hatton believes the team should of beaten Maitland last week by a larger scoreline after missing many clear opportunities, and the focus for this round is to convert more of those opportunities as they present themselves. He also noted that Tigers raise a level when taking on Norths, and the team is expecting a tough game from them.
Tigers will be under strength for this game, with Adam Birkfield out due to rep commitments, Rowan Oakes and Adam Barry out with work commitments and Nathaniel Skliros out with a fractured wrist. However the club will give the opportunity to some up and coming second graders in Nathan Berryman, Myles Kuranty and Joel Walker. Coach Evan Skliros indicated Tigers will be looking for a solid performance to back up thier result against The Entrance last week.

The final game of the day hits off at 6:30pm. Souths will battle big improvers University in one of the few night games of the season. Souths are without several big names this week, with Simon Vimpani, Shaun Kelly and John Hall unavailable. Coming into the squad though will be John Fernance, Ben King, Tristan Hunt, Scott Howard and Warrick Smith. John Fernance took the time to comment on the Lions next game: "Our start to the season has seen mixed results. A solid start against formidable Maitland and Gosford sides was followed with an under strength team being embarrassed by arch rivals Norths. Last week, although still not playing anywhere near our potential, we came out with a solid result with a big 11-0 win over Wests. This week, we will be looking to continue the winning form against University as we head into the final games of the first round. University have been playing some good hockey and dangerous players Jared Reeves and Tom Budden will need to be kept under wraps if we are to take the two points. We will be without midfielders Simon Vimpani and John Hall. Simon is consistently our best performer, and how we handle this loss will have a huge effect on the outcome of the match. Last week, saw the return of new recruit Kyle Bosworth to the lineup, and an immediate impact was seen with him slotting 4 goals against his former club. Returning to join him in the forward line this week are John Fernance (returning from Australian Country duties) and Ben King (returning from injury) which should provide the University defence with plenty of headaches. Also returning this week is Tristan Hunt, whose versatility could prove crucial in the absence of Vimpani."
Souths will be wary of University’s solid form so far this season, but will be satisfied with only one outcome, a win and two points from this match. The Students have advised that Jarred Reeves is out due to a hamstring injury, but they cannot confirm for how long. This will be a major blow to the team, but they have shown a lot of form in 2009 and would be keen to prove they are not a one man show on Sunday.

NDWHA Premier League Round 5 Preview
Thursday, 30 April 2009 03:20
ImageThis Saturday sees Round 5 of the Newcastle Women's Premier League competition. After 4 rounds Central, Regals, Oxford and University sit in the top four positions on the table and these teams play each other.
In what should be the match of the round Regals take on Central at 12.30. Regals will be reeling from their shock loss to Tigers on Monday night and will be out to regain some pride against the undefeated Central. Central will want to capitalise on their opportunities better than they did against Souths on Monday night where they were down at half time. Regals will need to ensure they do not give away cheap penalty corners as Central are very strong in creating results from these. This should be a close match fought strongly in the midfield with Central probably just going in as favourites.
The second match at 1.45pm sees the fit and fast University side take on Oxfords. Oxfords have been doing enough to get the wins although they will need to be full strength against a University side that has not yet reached their full potential. Both sides have strong attacking capabilities and the key to winning will be the defensive and goalkeeping of both sides.
The final match of the round sees last place Novos taking on the sleepers of the competition Tigers. Recently Tigers have made teams work extremely hard for their results and last Monday shocked Regals with a strong performance to give them their first win for the season. Novos are a young side developing their skills and teamwork and as they stengthen they will give many sides some headaches. Tigers are full of experience and should have too much for Novos this time around but Tigers will need to watch the pace of the young players as they develop their direction.
Souths have the bye this week after a strong performance against Central and are probably disappointed at the timing. This weeks round of matches should see some quality hockey and all members of the hockey community are welcome to support their club and the sport.
