HUGH McCrindle's association with the Manning River Times sportstar of the year award stretches back nearly four decades.
The now retired general manager of 2RE has been chairman of the judging panel for all those years. As such, he's passed judgement on some of this area's finest athletes.
Mr McCrindle was also a hockey player of some note in his prime - good enough to represent NSW. And those who know him well will attest to the fact that he isn't one to make a statement without considerable thought,
So when he declared at the judging of the 2011 sportstar that Maddison Rosser would eventually develop into one of the best hockey players the Manning has produced, it was worth noting. This, from an area that has already nurtured four Australian representatives - Robyn Leggatt, Kristen and Julie Towers and Brooke Morrison.
Leggatt is a former national captain and Olympian, Julie Towers a gold medal winner at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, her twin, Kristen a Commonwealth Games gold medallist in 1998 while Morrison won bronze at the 1992 Commonwealth Games.
"They were all wonderful players of course,'' Mr McCrindle added. "However, with the training facilities now available to our up and coming players, I think Maddison has the potential to be one of the Manning's best hockey products. I'm looking forward to seeing Maddison's career unfold. I'm sure we're going to hear much more about her.''
There were seven finalists in the 2011 sportstar - named in memory of former Times editor Ken McDonald, who instigated the award in 1960 when test cricketer Johnny Martin was the first winner.
For the first time the Times sportstar of the year and council's Australia Day sports award merged, with mayor Paul Hogan announcing Maddison as the winner during yesterday's Australia Day celebrations at council chambers.
Six of the seven finalists, Maddison, Josh Hook (motor cycle racing), Holli Wheeler (hockey), Joe Dimech (croquet), Wendy Moon (rifle shooting) and Arlene Blencowe (boxing) either represented on an Australian side last year or won a national championship. The other, football prospect Alison Traverso was named in the 20 strong All Stars team following the Australian under 14 championships - the equivalent of national representation.
"It was an outstanding field and showed amazing depth for a regional area,'' Mr McCrindle continued, adding that the oldest member of the field, Joe Dimech, is 71, with Alison at 14 being the youngest. However, in the end, Maddison's performances were the standout" Mr McCrindle added.
In 2011 Maddison's stellar achievements were:
* Toured Europe with the Australian All Schools under 16 team
* Was named in the NSW under 18 and 21 squads
* Selected in the Hockey Australia's emerging international squad. From this the team for the junior World Cup in 2013 will be announced.
Maddison, who plays for the powerful Tigers Hockey Club in the Manning division one competition, was unable to attend yesterday's award ceremony. She is the 52nd winner of the Times award. The Towers twins, Brooke Morrison and Robyn Leggatt are all past winners.
