Orchard in games plans

Simon Orchard returns to the international hockey stage today after missing the 2011 Champions Trophy campaign.

Orchard will be one of three regular Kookaburras rejoining the top squad at the Four Nations tournament in Perth following a stint on the sideline with injury.

The 2008 Maitland Sportsperson of the Year was out of action with a knee injury for the end of last year along with Joel Carroll and Graeme Begbie.

But the trio will don the green and gold once more and have the chance to impress national selectors six months out from the London Olympics.

The Kookaburras first test at the Four Nations tournament will be against Australia A at Lemnos Shenton Park before fixtures with world top 10s Argentina (Friday) and the Netherlands (Sunday) at Perth Hockey Stadium.

Kookaburras coach Ric Charlesworth said competition for spots would be hot for the world number one team.

“With 28 players in the Olympic squad and 14 players in the development squad, this gives us a good opportunity to test the groups and assess their state of preparedness,” Charlesworth said. “We are heavy in training at the moment and these matches will give the players a great chance to play against strong teams that we’ll be competing against in London.  Every game we play will help us to further define our best team.”

Another major factor in the upcoming series will be the use of the newly laid Olympic Games replica blue pitch at Lemnos Shenton Park.

“It will be great to play serious matches against quality teams on a blue pitch,” Charlesworth said. “We hope the conditions will give us a good insight into what to expect in London.”

A number of experienced Kookaburras players will line up for Australia A in the first week of competition before switching back to the top group in week two.

Play continues for the Kookaburras next with four more matches against the same opponents, sharing venues between Lemnos and Perth.

Asian hockey tour date looms

NEWCASTLE'S Australian Country hockey representatives, John Fernance, Tristan Hunt and Melissa Greer are leaving nothing to chance in adopting an arduous off-season fitness campaign in readiness for their Asian tour in April.

A devised plan in the gymnasium has been the centre of attention during the summer months but all three are looking to be back on the playing turf next week.

The Asian tour begins in Thailand with a warm-up match for both men and women followed by a three-test series against the national team.

The Australian Country sides will then head to Malaysia, where they will compete in another three-match test series against the powerful Malaysian under-21 team.

"We expect all matches to be extremely difficult and certainly very competitive," Fernance said.

"Not only do we have to face off against very fast and skilful opposition but we have to try and battle the sometimes trying weather conditions.

"Fortunately our club trainings begin next week and then we have the Hunter Power Cup and a couple of local premier league matches before we depart so we should be nearing top match fitness by the time we meet the Asian teams.

"But you are never quite sure if you have that level of fitness until you face the opposition and determine the type of game that will be played. I know the Asian teams are quite upbeat and love to play a running game so we will continue to train hard to meet the demands."

Hunt, who is one of the best defensive players in the country, will captain the Australian Country men's team.

Sports star of the year - Maddison Rosser
Wednesday, 01 February 2012 08:54

COURTESY MANNING VALLEY TIMES

HUGH McCrindle's association with the Manning River Times sportstar of the year award stretches back nearly four decades.

The now retired general manager of 2RE has been chairman of the judging panel for all those years. As such, he's passed judgement on some of this area's finest athletes.

Mr McCrindle was also a hockey player of some note in his prime - good enough to represent NSW. And those who know him well will attest to the fact that he isn't one to make a statement without considerable thought,

So when he declared at the judging of the 2011 sportstar that Maddison Rosser would eventually develop into one of the best hockey players the Manning has produced, it was worth noting. This, from an area that has already nurtured four Australian representatives - Robyn Leggatt, Kristen and Julie Towers and Brooke Morrison.

Leggatt is a former national captain and Olympian, Julie Towers a gold medal winner at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, her twin, Kristen a Commonwealth Games gold medallist in 1998 while Morrison won bronze at the 1992 Commonwealth Games.

"They were all wonderful players of course,'' Mr McCrindle added. "However, with the training facilities now available to our up and coming players, I think Maddison has the potential to be one of the Manning's best hockey products. I'm looking forward to seeing Maddison's career unfold. I'm sure we're going to hear much more about her.''

There were seven finalists in the 2011 sportstar - named in memory of former Times editor Ken McDonald, who instigated the award in 1960 when test cricketer Johnny Martin was the first winner.

For the first time the Times sportstar of the year and council's Australia Day sports award merged, with mayor Paul Hogan announcing Maddison as the winner during yesterday's Australia Day celebrations at council chambers.

Six of the seven finalists, Maddison, Josh Hook (motor cycle racing), Holli Wheeler (hockey), Joe Dimech (croquet), Wendy Moon (rifle shooting) and Arlene Blencowe (boxing) either represented on an Australian side last year or won a national championship. The other, football prospect Alison Traverso was named in the 20 strong All Stars team following the Australian under 14 championships - the equivalent of national representation.

"It was an outstanding field and showed amazing depth for a regional area,'' Mr McCrindle continued, adding that the oldest member of the field, Joe Dimech, is 71, with Alison at 14 being the youngest. However, in the end, Maddison's performances were the standout" Mr McCrindle added.

In 2011 Maddison's stellar achievements were:

* Toured Europe with the Australian All Schools under 16 team

* Was named in the NSW under 18 and 21 squads

* Selected in the Hockey Australia's emerging international squad. From this the team for the junior World Cup in 2013 will be announced.

Maddison, who plays for the powerful Tigers Hockey Club in the Manning division one competition, was unable to attend yesterday's award ceremony. She is the 52nd winner of the Times award. The Towers twins, Brooke Morrison and Robyn Leggatt are all past winners.
